How To Prevent Mold Growth in Your Home

Using these mildew-fighting tips will save you money and headaches.

Humidity makes a difference

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (also known as the CDC) has many recommendations regarding mold prevention in the home. Keeping humidity levels in your home as low as you can, for example, is highly recommended. Keep it no higher than 50% throughout the day and it will make all the difference. Try an air conditioner or dehumidifier to help you keep the level low.

Invest in a meter

You can buy a meter to check your home’s humidity at any neighborhood home improvement store. A friendly reminder, the humidity levels in our home change over the course of a day. This means you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day for the best results.

Air needs to flow

Be sure the air in your home flows freely. Use exhaust fans that vent outside your home, especially in the kitchen and in each bathroom. Make sure your clothes dryer vents are blowing outside your home. Practicing these small things will add up to a reduced chance of mold growing.

Inspect for any water leakage

Fix any leaks in your home’s roof, walls, or plumbing so mold does not have moisture to grow. Clean up and dry out your home fully and quickly (within 24–48 hours) after a flood. Remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked and cannot be dried right away. Think about not using carpet in places like bathrooms or basements that may have a lot of moisture.

Inhibitors make all the difference

Add mold inhibitors to paints before painting. If you decide to go this route, this can be one of those “thank yourself later” tasks. It is less likely that mold will grow at all when using these nifty tools. You can buy mold inhibitors at paint and home improvement stores.

Mildew prevention

Anywhere in the home with high amounts of water regularly running is the most susceptible to mold growth. Be diligent when checking areas of the home like the laundry room, kitchen, and bathrooms. It grows in the dampest areas like under the sink, corners of the ceiling, and even behind washing machines.

Another mold prevention tip to do is to clean these mold-prone rooms with mold-killing products. This will prevent anything from growing in the first place. Be sure to also wipe down any walls that may get in contact with steam or have poor circulation within the room.
